Program Recap: Philanthropy New York Hosts its First Next Generation Retreat

On October 9th, an intimate group ranging in age from 22-30 gathered for a next generation retreat, a half-day of conversation and interactive exercises and skill-building. What they all had in common was either current or future involvement in their family’s philanthropy. They came seeking others doing this work—to figure out where their motivational values animate or will animate their philanthropy and where those values fit in with their family’s legacy.

Commentary: “Visibility” and Corporate Foundations

A goal of Smart Assets is to present ideas and develop discussions about issues in philanthropy. Those issues can be sensitive or volatile. While we want to encourage a space where people can openly say what they want, an occasional commentator may feel uncomfortable about writing under his or her own name. Philanthropy New York created its Documentary Series to get our members thinking about alternative mediums for promoting their missions and the work of their grantees. On September 15th, we were honored to screen Advise and Dissent, a documentary that captures the behind-the-scenes drama of the confirmation battles for three Supreme Court nominees. We asked Doug Kendall, Founder and President of the Constitutional Accountability Center and one of the evening’s panelists, to provide us with a recap.

Benchmarking Diversity: A First Look at New York City Foundations and Nonprofits is the first study of its kind for the New York philanthropic sector, the first nationally to examine the racial and ethnic demographics of foundations and nonprofit organizations at the same time, and the first to ask nonprofits how they define/describe a minority-led organization.
